Websites for Writers

Literary Hub is a compendium of interesting books and writing tips that I like to scroll through as I have my morning coffee.

I liked hearing about what Arundhati Roy has been up to lately – her book, The God of Small Things, written in 1997, was a revelation. Now, twenty years later, she’s written a follow-up called The Ministry of Utmost Happiness.  Nice to have her back!

Stray Dog follows Amazon Race Team

November 24, 2014

London’s Daily Mail featured an article about a stray dog so determined to find a home that he followed an extreme sports racing team over 400 miles! Luckily, it has a happy ending. He was just a bit tuckered and needed a nap!

Challenge: As the team neared the finished the tasks began to take their toll on Arthur and he ended up with some injuries

Moment of Silence

September 11, 2014

Remembering the souls lost on 9/11 today, and praying for families and survivors.

A while back, I wrote a poem for prayerpower4today, my blog with writing partners Sue Bradford Edwards and Lori Strawn, about the preciousness of life. With your indulgence, I’ll re-post it here as we honor the fallen today.

Live with Grace

The main thing I wish for you is this:
A rich, full life.
Even if you’re not rich.
Even if your belly’s not full.
The “for-now” -ness gets us all into trouble.
We say we’ll just take this job… “for now.”
Or stick with this relationship that’s a sinking ship….. “for now.”
For now is another way of saying, I accept less than I deserve.
So here’s the tricky part.  Be content but don’t settle.
Expect great things.
Blast off in a rocket to reach the stars.
Build an eighth wonder in your imagination.
How would you live if you knew you couldn’t fail?
What would you do if you had all you ever wanted?
Would you suddenly know how to be happy?
Mr. Right doesn’t do that for you.
Growing a third eye and seeing into the future won’t make it clear.
It’s already there, all wrapped up inside of you.
Ask God’s help.  Do it yourself.
Get on your knees and pray.
Get on your feet and walk.
Be about it.  Now move.

This story about a college basketball player and a terminally ill fan really touched my heart.  The video brought a tear to my eye and a smile to my face at the same time.

We Remember

September 11, 2013

August 4, 2011 012

There are stars whose light only reaches the earth longer after they have fallen apart.  There are people whose remembrance gives light to the world, long after they have passed away.  This light shines in our darkest nights on the road we must follow.

Cranky Pants and Coffee Cups

August 1, 2013

On the news this morning, researchers announced that having four cups of coffee per day can reduce the risk of suicide by 50%.

You sure it’s the coffee?

Could it be that, if you have time for four cups of coffee you’re not out working in a coal mine? That you have a desk, an office even, nice crisp white collar. You’re not out digging ditches. Your bills are paid (mostly) and you have a 401K.

Could that be it?

You sure it’s the coffee?

Could it be that people who are having four cups of coffee are usually doing it at a break room table with other people. I think this is referred to as “socializing” with “friends.” Some regard this as having an emotional support network.

You sure it’s the coffee?

But hey. You guys did the research. You got the government grant. You screened out all the other variables that might have an impact.  Right? So it must be the coffee.

Sorry about the sarcasm, good people. I’ve only had two cups of coffee this morning, so I still have my crankypants on. Talk to me two cups from now and I’m sure I’ll be right as rain!

New MS Treatment

Age Discrimination in the News

There’s a medical breakthrough in the treatment of multiple sclerosis that I haven’t read much about in the media, but Northwestern University’s website tells us all about it. Hope it’s as effective as they claim, but only time will tell.

Arms Around You, Boston

April 25, 2013

It was a week
to shake the faith
right out of our bones.

But faith cannot fall
to such a small god:
a god of bombs, bullets, ripped limbs.

Seek God elsewhere.
He is there in the helpers.
In solace, yes, and mourning, too.
In healing hands, in hope.

Look to those who know the truth:
What is not love
cannot be God.

Hate destroys.
Love restores.
There is your answer.
